One On One with Kayla Ewell; Soap City

Kayla Ewell: Those were real tears. That was absolutely nothing fake at all. It's one of the types of scenes, dramatic, is what I feel like I can do the best, and really get in touch with my feelings. So it's just one of my all-time favorite things to do, and it just makes it so easy to do with Lorenzo Lamas [Hector] and Sydney Penny [Samantha] right by your side because they are so good at what they do, and I feel like when they act with me they look right into my soul, and they really get there. And they cry and so when they're crying it makes me want to cry, and we're all crying and it's just a big cry fest!

You know, it really is an amazing experience, and really emotionally draining. Afterwards, I feel like I just want to go to sleep or I just want to sit here. I get really tired afterwards, because it takes a lot out of you. But it's definitely an experience that I absolutely love to do. When I first auditioned for the show it was like, oh, I just did scenes that were like nothing dramatic at all. So to have them believe in me that much to give me scenes like this means so much to me.

It was some really amazing stuff out there.

KE: Thank you so much, I can't wait to see it, I'm really excited.

It's also great to watch, because it looks like a major turning point for your character.

KE: Oh definitely. This will probably be the hardest thing she has to go through in her entire lifeBver. She will switch having her dad as her hero and being the perfect little girl, to really seeing the rough side of life and not really being as loving. She is not going to be the same Caitlin for a while, it's going to take her a while to get used to it. And then she'll go back to her old self but we'll see what happens. It will be really interesting to watch Caitlin.

And I imagine you're going to have mixed feelings towards Samantha as well.

KE: Oh, yeah, towards her dad, she feels so crushed because he was her hero for her whole life and now she's just found out that he's lied to her about this? And then she thinks that Samantha knew the entire time, so she's angry towards Samantha, because Caitlin spills her heart out to Samantha about her dreams about her mom and everything. So she is just feeling so confused and really angry and upset and just all of those emotions swelling around in her, so it's a tough time for her, definitely.

Watching those scenes with you and Sydney, there's a nice rapport. It must be easy to step into the roles as mother and daughter.

KE: It's so easy because she makes it easy. She makes sure that we keep this connection with each other. Right off the bat though, I liked her so much, and I could feel that she felt the same way about me and it just makes me really happy that we have wonderful chemistry. It really makes it easy to be her daughter and to feel like you love her because I'm like, "I do love you!" You know? So it's cool.

Did you know when you signed on that they would throw you such a curve ball?

KE: Oh my gosh, in the very beginning I thought that I was cast to be Thomas's [Drew Tyler Bell] girlfriend, and then within the first week I had a meeting with Bradley Bell. And that's when he told me, "Oh, by the way you're going to be Samantha's daughter." And I went "That must be heavy, judging from the way that you said that, but I have no clue who Samantha is." So I watched the show, got to really study her, I'm like, that's my momBë. And then they brought Lorenzo Lamas on as my dad, and I'm just like, "Wow this is going to be awesome!" And then Linda Gray [Priscilla] is my grandma, and I'm like, this is the best cast ever, you know!

You have quite a soap opera heritage, so to speak, with Lorenzo being from Falcon Crest, Linda on Dallas and Sydney having been on Santa Barbara and AMC. It's kind of cool to have that on your family tree.

KE: Oh, definitely, definitely... it's so fun.

What's it been like working with Linda? So far, you've had some brief interaction, where you walk in and she recognizes you...

KE: Correct, and actually that's all we've gotten to do, but we talk a lot off-set, and she is just one of the sweetest people, she is so nice to every single person you know, and honestly that's how everyone is here. Everyone is so nice, and I really feel like there is something magical about it here because for everyone to get along so well, it's just meant to be, you know?

How is it working with Lorenzo?

KE: Oh my gosh, the first day he walked in the door, I looked at him and I said, "Are you my dad?" And he goes, "Are you Caitlin?" And I said, "Yes." Then he goes, "I'm your dad," and I went, "Oh my gosh, hi!" And we hugged each other and from that moment on, there was this special connection that we have with each other that is so awesome. He is the nicest man ever, no matter what, and when I make mistakes he is always there to help me, when he makes mistakes, I'm always there to help him. And I feel like it's really cool to have him as my dad and Samantha as my mom, because the three of us have such special chemistry. We really could be a family.

Do you have hopes for how you would like to see this all play out?

KE: Ok, I was talking with Sydney, and we were saying how we hope that Samantha moves into the house because that would be really cool. But then, of course, it's a soap opera and that wouldn't be drama, and they need drama. So we'll see what happens. I want her to be my mom, I want her to live with me, so that's what I hope happens.

And that really has been a major wish for Caitlin.

KE: That's what she's wanted her entire life, all those nightmares and dreams she's had; this is what she's wanted the entire time. So to have that would be a dream come true for her.
